# Preferred Contact

The preferred contact channel is a user's primary point of contact to receive all Digital Identity Management-driven notification messages.

When a user first onboards with their email address or mobile number, that address or number is set as their preferred contact channel by default. If the end user registers additional email addresses or mobile numbers to their Digital Identity Management end user profile, they have the option to change their preferred contact channel as needed.

Social Onboarding
-
If a user onboards using a social account (for example, Facebook or Google), then Digital Identity Management receives an email address or mobile number from the social media provider as a part of the onboarding process. Digital Identity Management sets that email address or mobile number as the end user's preferred contact channel by default. In the event that a user onboards with their social account, but later prefers sign-in using their email address, mobile number, or alias, then they will first need to add a password. End users can add a password either from an authenticated view (that is, within their end user profile in your organization's application, if any) or anonymously using the **Forgot Password?** process. As a Digital Identity Management Care Agent, you can also initiate the password reset on behalf of a user.
**Note:** You can only change the preferred contact channel if the end user has more than one registered contact channels. Aliases do not count.

Once the end user has more than one registered contact channels, you can [change their preferred contact channel](changingPreferredContacts) on behalf of them.
