# Magic Link Authentication

Digital Identity Management supports password-less authentication using magic links that are sent to the user by email or SMS. A magic link is a method of authentication where the user isn't required to enter their password credentials, even if they have one. Digital Identity Management sends the user a link with an embedded token that the user only needs to click or tap on to complete their login/sign-up process.

Magic links are implemented by sending the user one of the associated notification template to authenticate the user's identity. Digital Identity Management provides relevant[**Admin console** templates](https://docs.vindicia.com/bundle/b_connectAdminGuide/page/topics/templatesAbout_c.html) that are as follows:

* Email - **verification-of-authentication-identifier-during-onboarding-using-link.html** and **verification-of-authentication-identifier-during-onboarding-using-link.txt**
* SMS - **verification-of-authentication-identifier-during-onboarding-using-link.txt**

## Authenticate With Magic Link When User Has Password

Digital Identity Management supports authentication with a magic link, even if the user has a password. The general flow for magic link authentication is as follows:

1. The user navigates to the organization’s login page.
2. The user enters an email address or mobile number and clicks next.
3. From the UI, the user selects **Login with Magic Link**.
4. The user receives a notification (email/sms) with the magic link, that they can now click on or tap.
5. If the link is valid, the user is authenticated and redirected to the destination URL completing their login process.

Magic links can only be used once for authentication, and previously issued links are invalidated. The expiry time for the link is controlled by the **Admin app** setting **Long token expiration period**.

**Benefits of Magic Links**

This capability is helpful for applications that want to accommodate users that have forgotten their password but do not want to reset it, or simply do not want to type in their password. Magic link authentication reduces the steps required to authenticate and login, providing a more streamlined user experience.
